The research goal of the project is to look at the limits of scientific explanation from different perspectives and in different domains (cosmology, cognitive science, normative sciences, theology). Limits of the scientific method will be analyzed 'from within', i.e. how it operates in its respective applications, and 'from outside', i.e. from the metascientific, philosophical and theological perspectives.

Past Conferences

  • The Normative Mind

    17th Kraków Methodological Conference
The Normative Mind: Dimensions of Decision-Making

There are various issues connected to the normative dimension of the mind. First, there exists the issue of rule-following: how is it possible that the human mind can apprehend rules and obey or disobey them? Second, there is the problem of normativity: when is a rule of behaviour normative? Third, there is the question pertaining to the basis of the normative mind: whether it is of a psychological or biological character and what are the differences between various kinds of normative reasoning (moral, legal, prudential). During the conference these and related issues shall be discussed by philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists.
  • The Causal Universe

    16th Kraków Methodological Conference
    The Causal Universe

Natural sciences provide extremely detailed description of how Universe functions by providing a set of scientific laws. These laws reflect regularities in nature and allow for the explanation and prediction of the observed phenomena. What seems to escape the power of contemporary science entirely, however, is the answer to the question of why the Universe is. Such an inquiry demands the use of a fundamental philosophical category of causality. The conference offered a unique opportunity to broaden our understanding of how to combine our vast knowledge of the laws governing the Universe in the quest for the ultimate explanation of its existence and specificity.
  • The Emotional Brain

    15th Kraków Methodological Conference
The Emotional Brain: From the Humanities to Neuroscience and Back Again

In the past, emotions and feelings belonged to the domain of the humanities. The 'affective revolution' of the 1990s changed all this. Neuroscientists have showed us that emotions and feelings can be investigated with empirical methods. Can both disciplines - the humanities and neuroscience - enrich and educate each other? Or maybe it is neuroscience that will dominate the reflection over the human emotional life? Or possibly it will stay as it is: two separate disciplines, two separate methods, with no real point of contact? The goal of The Emotional Brain: From the Humanities to Neuroscience and Back Again conference was to contribute to such a discussion.
  • Road to Reality

    14th Kraków Methodological Conference
Road to Reality with Roger Penrose. Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy

The first part of the conference, devoted to Penrose's mathematics and physics will was held in the Institute of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and the second part, which took place in the Jagiellonian University in Cracow was devoted to Penrose's physics and philosophy and considered as The 14th Cracow Methodological Conference.
  • Evolution of the Universe and the Evolution of Life

    13th Kraków Methodological Conference
The Evolution of the Universe and the Evolution of Life

XIII Kraków Methodological Conference was devoted to theories of evolution: the biological and cosmological one. The opportunity to deal with the topic was the International Year of Darwin. A special guest of the conference was prof. Francisco J. Ayala.
